Have you ever begun a sink or toilet repair only to realize that the shutoff valve won’t shut off? This is a relatively common, but frustrating problem. While some valves might be easy to replace, this isn’t true for all of them. If your valve is one of the latter, you should perform the following steps:
- Turn off the main water valve
- Remove the packing nut
- Unscrew the stem
- Take the stem to the hardware store to find a replacement washer
- Clean grit from the valve body
- Put on the new wash
After you complete these steps, your shutoff valve should work well.
